With impressive success and integrated efforts, and for the first time in Al-Makassed Hospital in Jerusalem, the kidney unit in the hospital recorded, two years after its establishment, the first successful kidney transplant operation for a patient suffering from kidney failure, as the kidney was transferred from his brother, the donor.
The kidney transplant operation was performed under the supervision of Dr. Muhammad Burini, a specialist in kidney diseases and transplantation and head of the kidney unit at Al-Makassed Hospital, Dr. Abdul Qader Hammad, a consultant in kidney transplant surgery in Liverpool, and Dr. Adly Idris, a specialist in vascular surgery and kidney transplantation in Liverpool, in addition to the intensive cooperation of the surgical team at Al-Makassed Hospital.
Dr. Muhammad Burini indicated that the transplant operation is qualitative and distinctive, as it was performed using the laparoscopic technique, explaining that the kidney was removed from the donor using the laparoscopic technique and transplanted into the patient's body. An immunosuppressive drug, Campath, was also used, which is used as a primary treatment (Induction therapy) so that cortisone pills are not used at all in treating the patient after the transplant.
Dr. Al-Bourini said that the patient was discharged from Al-Makassed Hospital in excellent health, thank God.
He also mentioned that the kidney disease unit at Al-Makassed Hospital has witnessed remarkable development in the recent period, with the support of the hospital administration, represented by bringing an immunological microscope (fluorescence), which made it possible to take a kidney sample and read it with immunological stains and diagnose kidney disease without the need to send samples to other hospitals.
Dr. Al-Bourini pointed out that the establishment and equipping of the kidney dialysis unit for patients residing in the hospital was completed in 2017, and it is equipped with two advanced RO dialysis machines in addition to a water purification device supplied to the dialysis machine, where this achievement is crowned today by performing the first kidney transplant operation at Al-Makassed Hospital in Jerusalem.
For his part, Dr. Haitham Al-Hassan, Director General of Al-Makassed Hospital, congratulated the kidney disease unit staff, and all the surgical and technical staff at Al-Makassed Hospital on this wonderful achievement, stressing the importance of introducing the organ transplant service with its advanced technologies to the hospital, and he also stressed the hospital administration's pride in the highly qualified human cadres, who are working hard to provide the best service to the Palestinian patient.
